Piltdown man was fragments of a skull and jaw bone claimed to have been found by Charles Dawson in 1912 in England. For forty years afterwards, it was controversially claimed to be the remains of a missing link between man and a common ancestor of man and apes and … even better he was British.
In 1953 however, it was revealed to be a fake. Sawed down teeth on an ape’s jaw combined with a Medieval human skull, both chemically treated to give the appearance of a very old fossil.
Creationists latched on to this story as evidence that there is corruption in the scientific community regarding evolution and that all of the other proto-human fossils that have been found are also fakes.
But what really happened with Pilty?
Piltdown man was a controversy almost as soon as it left the gate. It was rarely available for scientific scrutiny. Instead it was locked away and guarded like the Royal Jewels. Brits were proud of Pilty because he appeared to show that Briton was at least in part, the cradle of humanity.
By the time it was revealed to be a hoax in 1953, it was already regarded as not fitting in with the fossil hominids that had been found elsewhere by then. Contrary to the scientific corruption argument from Creationists, it was the scientific community itself that exposed it as a hoax.
How do we know that the other hominid finds such as Lucy aren’t Piltys? Scientists now have much more sophisticated dating and other processes for evaluating fossils. Instead of being locked away, hominid fossils are ruthlessly scrutinized by experts. Had Pilty’s teeth just been properly examined under a microscope, it would have been exposed as a hoax very early on.
Great site!!!! I will pass along the real good news. Truth no matter what, trumps the lies.
Religion must be taught in schools!! But they must show the contradictions, atrocities, and absurdities if there is to be any real scientific progress.
Then all the monies thrown in the coffers that is impeding scientific progress and reality can be redirected and genuine progress can be achieved for humankinds.
I believe children will get it if shown all the lies, and will be given the greatest gift of all, the ability to learn to become creative free thinkers.
Why must religion be taught in schools? It’s in illogical subject, devoid of rationality and full of contradictions. When you boil it down to any usefulness, it consists of a few stories that help to teach morality, much of which is also flawed. So I would argue vehemently that religion must NOT be taught in schools.
Jennifer,
Excellent comment.
I’d also like to add that allowing one religion to come in and brainwash our children can in theory open the floodgates of the teaching of all kinds of other nutty religious concepts. How can one argue against the teaching of reincarnation when teaching is allowed that a god poofed out of nowhere to speak the universe into existence and made man out of dirt and a woman out of a rib bone?
That would be putting one religion over another which I think is not supposed to be allowed by the US constitution (although the US supreme court seems to be packed more and more every year with jurors who don’t seem to care much about the constitution).
Well ,sadly there are a lot of scientific findings pop-up everywhere that are once said are true but thanks for developments in modern scientific techniques these hoaxes have been revealed.
Science is a developing body of knowledge so it’s understandable that there are several bumps on it’s road to growth.
I see no reason why the bible cannot be placed beside the Iliad in comparative literature as it should since it is part of western culture.
To teach that the miracles and nonsense as fact would give equal credence to the Greek Pantheon as well.
Keep the bible out of sciences and history, nor should morals be taught from the bible, and none of the PI equals 3.0 math
